An immigrant to Germany in the 1970s, Ramesh Lal was often homesick for traditional Indian meals. Dissatisfied with the local Indian food scene, he realised he would have to learn to cook if he wanted to taste the tangy flavours of home any time soon. While hustling at his day job at a chocolate factory, and learning to cook at night, he managed to set aside enough to start his own restaurant. After 30 successful years, he finally decided it was time to retire and closed his restaurant in Berlin. 

Watching his father in the kitchen, Ramesh’s son, Dennis, was inspired to become a chef. He spent years training and working at a series of restaurants, before realising what he really wanted was to collaborate with his father. In 2018, he urged his father to come out of retirement so they could start Bollywood Curry and finally work alongside each other.
